CD Review: Journey - Revelation

Journey - Revelation
2008 Nomata LLC
Ray Van Horn, Jr.

The departure of league-established power vocalist Jeff Scott Soto from Journey so quickly after joining was perhaps as unpopular for many fans as the original split with Steve Perry so long ago. What some people forget is that Soto bears a support group as devout as any. Though Steve Augeri had for years aptly carried the illusion that Perry had never left with dead-on accuracy (so much to the point you heard unwitting casual rock fans actually call him Steve Perry), Augeri had to bow out for medical reasons, which left the time-honored rock band in stasis once Jeff Scott Soto had subsequently crossed back through the turnstiles which he'd entered.

One thing about Neil Schon and Journey, they refuse to let that principal butterfly crooning resonance that Steve Perry made his own stray from their core sound that largely made their best-known albums Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape and Frontiers some of mainstream rock's best offerings from the late seventies through the mid-eighties. One might accuse the remaining trio from Journey's glory years, Schon, Jonathan Cain and Ross Vallory (with Schon and Vallory being the remaining two from Journey's formative days) of having continued sour grapes that Steve Perry ever took flight from the band; that, or they just know even a reasonable facsimile of Perry's then-youthful exuberance and vocal fragility is the way to stay alive in a competitive game that embraces its pasttime heroes, though frequently from afar in a cyclical business that usually has no time to check its shoulder for the past.

Enter Arnel Pineda, a Latino whiz-kid who appears almost waif-like in relation to his veteran charges that includes former Bad English drummer Deen Castronovo, who has held camp in Journey since Schon and Cain rode Bad English to their satisfaction. For Pineda's purposes, he comes to a band with everything to gain. Though Journey's last commercially-accepted hurrah came with the powerhouse rock smash Frontiers and a contribution to the Tron soundtrack beforehand, they briefly (and some argue quietly) exited the scene with the top-ten selling single "Be Good To Yourself" from Raised On Radio before resurging for a nostalgic run in the mid-ninties with Augeri. Of course, Journey, even in a shaky North American rock scene discovered they could sell a few albums, though it wasn't until Generation X had hit its thirties that Journey would score with 2001's Arrival and 2005's Generations.

Not a bad prospect for a young buck who can both sell "The Perry Factor" as well as his own repertoire of twenty-something budding maturity, and this is one reason why Journey's Revelation works as well as it does. However, it's the inspiration Pineda's seniors derive from his presence that largely accounts for the album's strength. If there's any inhibitant to Arnel Pineda's vocal delivery, it's an occasional timing squib in which he'll jump the gun in minute spots. Otherwise, the dude recognizes the opportunity he's been given in Journey and he's savvy enough to play himself into the decidedly old school rock structuring of Revelation. When most singers in his age bracket are full of jacked-up adrenaline with something to prove, Pineda allows Journey to dictate the pace to which he follows suit. He can milk the slow curves of Revelation's ballads like "What I Needed," "Turn Down the Night" and "After All These Years" with convincing romance (though no one will ever match Steve Perry's uncanny ability to reduce ladies to tears and guys to hopeful midnight trysts with those blubbering babes). Pineda can also confidently carry Revelation's steady rockers like "Never Walk Away," "Change For the Better" and "Faith In the Heartland," all songs that would normally befit a singer almost two generations beyond him.

For Journey's purposes, they have recruited a disciplined junior gun with which to stick to their scripts of formula-driven power rock. While Journey over the years has somehow lost their ability to find the mega-hook that catapulted them to superstardom with classic songs like "Open Arms," "Separate Ways," Who's Crying Now," "Wheel in the Sky," "Any Way You Want It" or "Don't Stop Believin'" this doesn't stop Revelation from throbbing along respectably. Naturally there's a throwback feel to Revelation with its thick, arena-ready production and attentive tendencies towards a Big '80s sound. "Wildest Dream," "Where Did I Lose Your Love" and especially "Change For the Better" sound like tracks ready-made for an eighties action flick or teen comedy, a fine art lost in today's films, that heavy-duty soundtrack arsenal that splashed atop the former decade's celluloid. Jonathan Cain's molasses-thick keys on "Change For the Better" especially makes you want to grab Vision Quest or Iron Eagle off the shelf and just get lost in retrospection.

While Revelation may be too retro for modern A&R reps looking to gloss their fabricated tech-hacked rap onto the payola-driven exclusive MP3 playlists of big boy radio programmers and while there's no monster hit lurking here (despite a hefty push of "Never Walk Away" and "After All These Years") the album as a whole shows major heart, be it the pulsing drum rolls from Deen Castronovo at the end of "Wildest Dream" or the way Journey tosses out some jam-minded prog at the end of "Faith in the Heartland" reflective of their Next and Look Into the Future albums.

Though Revelation tends to shimmy towards its conclusion instead of maintaining the balls-out hunger of the first two-thirds of the album, including a not-bad Satriani-like guitar-droned instrumental, "The Journey (Revelation)," the end result is a Journey album that is largely dialed in and assured of itself, which gives them the hope of a continued career with worthy rock material fronted by a soulful kid who just may be their future. Journey banks on this so much they decided to include a bonus CD with Revelation in which they give Arnel Pineda the opportunity to re-record a large chunk of band's most-revered hits.

In some ways, this is terribly disrespectful to Steve Perry, but for touring purposes, Journey obviously wants their fans to know that Pineda can field "Only the Young," "Faithfully," and "Open Arms" with barely an effort. The kid's a natural and it'll be interesting to hear how he does with this writer's favorite Journey ballad "Send Her My Love."

For triple pack fun, Revelation also comes with a live DVD and ye-bang, Journey is back in a way they haven't been since Steve Perry crushed the charts in 1984 with his solo album Street Talk. Though Journey have always been stalwart veterans, the doubt cast in their camp the second Perry broke rank and returned only in fleeting passage shook them to a lie they've been living with ever since. Revelation at least sounds like the monkey is officially off their backs.

Arnel Pineda is not Latino at all. LOL

Nice review. However, Arnel Pineda is asian (from the Philippines) and is already 40 years old.

Anonymous said...

Did this guy even do his researched? What are you talking about, "Latino" and "Kid"?? Isn't there enough articles there he can just copy? WOW!! LOL!!! He is Filipino and 40 yrs. old! LOL !!

Anonymous said...

This was a poorly written review. Though, I get the gist of what he was saying, the vernacular was crapy and the facts were way off. Latino???? Kid???? Arnel is probably older than the writer.

Anonymous said...

Yes the writer is younger, only 38:) I read his profile.

Arnel will be 41 in September.

Ray, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnel_Pineda

Cool review, anyway.

Arnel is not Latino, Deen is. Neil is part Latino from the mother side.

Journey decided to re-record the classics to show that it can be done as what SP's ego thought that nobody can do it. He thought he is the one who can control the band, separate himself after performances, bluffing-hard to get that the rest of Journey would kneel in front of him just to have him back. The truth is he cannot do it no more. Now he totally lost that trust. He became controlling that he had Steve Smith, Ross Valory, and Herbie Herbert replaced to his liking. Ross and Herbie are among the founders of Journey. Sorry his "bluff" did not work. I suggest you read the VH1 story about the Journey or check "Joberns" posting on youtube about the story if you have troubles looking for one.

"Latino, whiz-kid?"

Thanks for this dumbfounded review... a review founded by a dumb (ooops, bad English!)!

There are several English types:
British English, American English, Latino English, African American English, Chinese English, Filipino English, to name a few. I think Arnel Pineda's Filipino English is perfect. Hence, his English is perfect.

Anonymous said...

Ray, thanks for the effort and time you spent for this review.

Arnel Pineda is Filipino (from the Philippines, a country in Southeast Asia which has more than 180 languages, and a country with 7,107 islands). There are more than 11 million Filipinos who migrated around the globe, and MOST of them can read written English with no problem. Most Filipinos speak Filipino-English.

You described Arnel Pineda as Latino. It could be because of his Latino-sound name "Pineda." You described Arnel as a kid, or whiz kid... It could be because you associate kid with height. The shorter the person, he/she is a kid. But whatever the reasons why you described Arnel as such, it is a nice ignition for comment posting. Nice job!

By the way, could you do Journey fans a BIG favor?

Please sign the "Let Journey play the Half Time show at Super Bowl XLIII petition @ http://www.petitiononline.com/SB43HT/petition.html.

Thank you.

I guess lots of us, are offended by your word "Bad English" Don't be rude. Did you know that Philippines is the third english speaking country, worldwide!Be careful Ray, because we don't know if Arnel wasn't discovered by Journey< he could have landed, in any band like Chicago,we don't know.He is a Chamelion, who could fit his voice to any band.

You moron, "Bad English" he was quoting was a band. LOL!!!

Ray Van Horn, Jr. said...

Whoo, man, did you folks rightly give me a beating on this one! I'll do the walk of shame for my obviously poor insight of Mr. Pineda's origins. I consider myself a very thorough writer who takes the time to do deep research, which many of the bands I've interviewed will attest to. However, I admit to being very lax since the evidence is against me and will post a disclaimer to make amends.

If anyone knows the real me, you'd know that I take culture and race quite seriously and would be horribly upset with myself for any errors such as this.

I personally wrote this because I was won over by the album as a 38 year old Gen X kid who dug Journey over the years. Journey is hardly a metal band but they've been given love and attention from the metal community over the years and I was moved enough to do so as well, if the 4/5 rating isn't indicative enough.

I do, however, take exception to the commenters about your calling my Bad English rude because you've misconstrued my meaning there. I'm referring to the band Bad English, of course, not ANY cultural or lingual nuances. Once again, I am not a proponent of hate or racism and that wounds me more than being erroneous with my botched background. Considering one of my dearest friends is Chinese and his wife is Philippine, I would ask you to think before throwing darts at my personal character since you don't know me personally. That's far ruder than my unintentionally botching Mr. Pineda's ethnicity.

All that being said, I salute those of you who CONSTRUCTIVELY took the time defend Pineda and your affinity for Journey since the music is what's most important here when all is said and done.

Anonymous said...

Ray, I'd like you to know that when you wrote Bad English, I interpreted that you are describing Deen or Arnel with bad english. (dah!)

I'm so glad, the Internet power came to the rescue! I immediately searched for Bad English, and there it was ... the Bad English band. (dah!)

Am I dumb or dumber than you? (dah!)

and thanks to the last anon for your defense

Ray Van Horn, Jr. said...

no, brother/sister, apparently just exuberant in what you feel that you just rolled with it like I rolled with Pineda's last name and youthful looks in the wrong manner...the bro should take it as a compliment and I DO think highly of his vocal talent, if that wasn't clear in the review

Anonymous said...

Except for the lapses on Pineda's ethnicity, which is harmless (and I believe proudly heralds Pineda's Hispanic heritage), and age (which to me is a compliment), I salute your review as positively accurate. Might I impart my opinion that while the re-recordings may have given rise to a lot of interpretations and intentions (good and bad), I would like to believe that the real intention is two-fold, one is to pay homage to the previous lead singers/members who have a part in bringing these to the adoring fans and the other is to honor Pineda by allowing him to become a part of these classics. The former is self-explanatory. The latter offers Pineda a portion of the future rights/licenses to the re-recorded classics which he rightly deserves for bringing them back to the fans, new and old.

To the die-hard defenders of Pineda, scrutinize the review before making a comment. Your over-propensity to defend Pineda sometimes borders on blind partiality, totally lacking in objectivity. Shame on you for your rude and uncalled for comments. Nowhere in this review is there any taint of racist or insulting remarks. On the contrary, it shows the reviewer's praises on Pineda's talent. You should be thanking the reviewer instead.

To the rest of the commenters, bravo for your constructive comments. To Ray, continue on with your brave and impartial review.

I remain a music lover, and a new fan of Journey and Pineda.

Now this is a class act writer. When found errors in his writing, he fully acknowledge and amended as such. That's commendable. Bravo.

Ray Van Horn, Jr. said...

Anon 1, thank you for your defense and your insight; I can certainly grant your viewpoint and if that is Journey's intent, so be it. Considering the packaging is extremely fan-friendly at a more than reasonable cost, I figured that bonus CD was harmless in the overall perspective.

Anon 2, thank you as well; I take my reputation as a writer as deadly seriously as my reputation as a human being. Any lapse in either case forces me to check myself and hard.

Bullshit, they've just shown the OPPOSITE by going through 3 singers looking for someone to copy Perry as closely as possible. They are the ones “on their knees” to the alter of Perry, in their obsession with his voice….

Instead of taking this chance to dispel the thought that Jrny’s success was all about the voice, they’re just proving that it’s true.
I didn’t think so, but either they do, or they’re just too damn lazy to just let the music stand on it’s own - with a great vocalist singing in their OWN voice….

They fired Jeff Scott Soto (very badly, I might add) when they saw Pineda could do Perry’s voice better than he could.

The rerecords (where they have Arnel singing every last inflection that Perry sings in the originals) were done so that they could license all their classics to commercials without Perry’s approval (he was against the songs being used too loosely)

Which is just more proof that it is just all about the money for Schon.

From day one of the split from Perry, they have focused almost exclusively on coping Perry’s voice (They called Steve Augeri “Steve Perry with a Perm” to express how much they thought he sounded like Perry),

So, let’s see, they want to use his voice to make money, but cut him out of the approval process for using his voice – so they find it’s Karaoke form, …

Nice

I’ve tried to support Schon in his efforts to move on, hoping he would TRULY move on… but he’s obviously determined to remain stuck in the past and, apparently, has absolutely no guts or creativity.

No matter how good they make it, tofu steak and fake beer will never be as good or satisfying as the real thing….

And I won’t buy anything with these rerecords when I can choose the FAR superior originals – (Like, DSB – Arnel’s version is pretty good until you compare it to Perry’s)

And this isn’t about Arnel. His remarkable story is the only bright spot in this stomach turning soap opera. I just hope he is treated better than Augeri and JSS, but somehow I seriously doubt it….

I'm all for calling out a guy on his mistakes, but some of these comments are a little dim.

Comment 3: "Did this guy even do his researched? ... Isn't there enough articles..." Ray normally does his researched very well. Maybe he don't do enough research this time, though.

Comment 4: "...the vernacular was crapy and the facts were way off." That sounds suspiciously lik your speling!

Comment 11: "I guess lots of us, are offended by your word "Bad English" Don't be rude. Did you know that Philippines is the third english speaking country, worldwide!" Personally, I'm offended by your, bad comma placement and the way you call "Bad English" a word and your inability to use thespacebar and your unwillingness to Capitalize english. And anyway, what do you mean by "Philippines is the third english speaking country, worldwide?" The third largest population of English speaking people? The third country to ever speak English? Third in the rank of sexiest English speaking people?

Hmmmm... actually, most of these comments were pretty civil. That sort of takes the wind out of my sarcastic and self-righteous sails. Let me know if any mean people with sub-par spelling skills show up, and I'll totally make fun of them for you.

Oh, and I never would've thought that a Bad English reference would go over the heads of a bunch of Journey fans. Maybe nobody likes that Schon fella anymore.

Funny it is. I pity you Ray Van Horn...I can't believe people easily jump into conclusion. I myself is a Filipino, but I do get your point on your review. Some are just too ignorant and reacts impatiently by posting their comments without really understanding what you are trying to say. Bad English - Latino - kid - whatelse? Readers: Please don't be too sensitive...the reviewer (Ray Van Horn) didn't mean any harm at all. The Latino is a very simple mistake - due to Arnel's last name. I myself have a Chinese last name and alot of people call me Chinese than Filipino..but I do understand and never get offended. Bad English - this is a band...they are a popular band too. This doesn't mean Arnel has a bad english. lol. Kid - which is more of a compliment? being called a "kiddo" or an "oldie"? you tell me? kiddos.

To Ray Van Horn - good job on your review...i'm feeling you.

Believe it or not but you will hear more...sorry about that.

Yeah I'm with everyone, that was a major goof calling Arnel Pineda Latino. lol. The whiz kid statement is kind of understandable because that's what I thought in the beginning too. I didn't realize he was my age.
Thanks for the effort though, overall it is a good review.

Some of you might have misunderstood when he was refering to "Bad English". He wasn't talking about Arnel's English but was referring to Neil and Jon's band in the 80's which was really called "Bad English".

Anonymous said...

people today are too sensitive sometimes and the comments they make are rude and appalling...i think we should lighten up a little and if mistakes were made, we can point that out in a more civil way. thank you for acknowledging your mistakes mr. author and thank you for the review.

Anonymous said...

I agree. I am one of those sensitive people. That's is why I am posting this comment.

China has Chinese (people), who speak Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.). On the other hand, the Philippines has Filipinos (people), who could speak Pilipino (one of the many Philippine languages).

Philippine (adj) usually describes things like Philippine culture, Philippine Airlines, etc. It just does not sound right when describing a person, i.e., "Arnel is Philippine" just does not sound right nor does it look right because Arnel is not a thing, but a person. "Arnel is Filipino" would be the proper way of describing him as a person from the Philippines.

Anonymous said...

Actually, that was very well done! Necessarily edifying, yet pretty respectful - rather than just bashing and assuming the worst of intentions ,,, [like many of the previous posts did,,,]

Anonymous said...

Good Review! Thanks, it is very nice to see a review from someone who took the time to listen to the album. Your take on Pineda is quite the same as my own. I think the new CD is awesome!!! I hope Pineda stay with the band for a long time and record more albums though next time, I don't want to hear anything that has been sung by Steve Perry.

Ray Van Horn, Jr. said...

I appreciate everyone's input on what is my most commented-upon (and obviously controversial) review here on this page. I brought out as many people of Phillipene descent (or Filipino if you will) in arms supporting Mr. Pineda.

I commend you all for honoring one of your own and so long as your comments are respectful toward myself and each other, you are all welcome here. I'd rather not turn this into a battle over semantics and ideology or some misconstruing that is simply out-of-place. My only balk was what I interpreted to be an accusation of racism, and considering I am fostering a bi-racial infant at the moment, that cut deep and I won't stand for it.

All that being said, I thank everyone for their support and backing of me and my review. It is what it is; a review of an album that really wasn't even assigned to me from one of my press reps. Sad to see that I did something simply because I dug it and it caused so much of a hootenanny. Of course, I'm perfeclt fine with being called out when I'm in error, so let's all simply move on and enjoy the music, groovy?

To the original author,

A very nice review. Some are inaccurate but understandable. I totally get your point. And thanks for admitting and correcting your mistakes, a real class act.

I just analyzed some of the comments that were rude or condescending and one cannot conclude right away that those came from Filipino fans of Arnel Pineda.

Don't worry about those Filipinos who are ultra-sensitive (besides, we don't know how old they are). Please be assured that there are A LOT MORE OF US FILIPINOS who are understanding, forgiving and don't cry out racism right away just because of a slight criticism.

To my fellow Filipinos, pls don't cry out racism right away. People make mistakes which mostly are not intentional. And we should be able to take criticism specially if it's something that we can use to improve ourselves.

God bless you all!

I posted my review of REVELATION and I've had a ton of site hits because of it. There is a devout Journey following across the globe so I'm not surprised that everyone caught the mistakes on Arnel's age and nationality. Let's give Ray a break, it's a mistake that he has admitted. I think the anonymous people commentting need to do a little research themselves.....when Ray referenced Bad English he meant the band that Schon & Cain were in with John Waite that had major chart success and not a dig at Arnel's ability to speak the English language.

As far as the album, I think it's superb musically and excellent value wise.

Very good review!! As far as Arnel being Latino..hey that might not be too far off. Philippines under Spain for 300 years there are a few Spanish blood sprinkled all over the Philippines.

By the way, the re-record of the Classics was excellent specially DSB. Pineda's edgier voice made that song more of a rocker song. No knock on Steve. His softer voice made him very popular with the ladies.

I’m not going to pigeon hole this as a return to ’80’s Journey. This effort is top tier. Production is superb. Musicianship, superb. The original content rivals anything they have done in the past. Jonathon Cains songwriting ability, in my opinion, is exceptional and continues to flourish. Probably one of the most underated songwriters in the business. The energy put forth on the live DVD given the short time with Arnel is truly amazing. Deen Castronova’s voice is equaled by his perfectly timed and thunderous drumming. Neil Schon appears to find new life and truly rocks with enthusiasm. Also, Ross Vallory’s work is synchronized perfectly with the driving soul of this band. Great job men. Looking forward to seeing you in Detroit!!!

I've read about 20 reviews on the subject album before I read this one which comparatively holds a lot of water for its objectivity and balance. Somehow I knew right away that the author's use of "Latino" and "kid", although not factual, were unintentional and did not mean to offend since over 90% of his review of Pineda as a performer was fair and positive. The author's responses, as pointed out by another commenter, was really a class act, enhancing his credibility as a reviewer. Although some of the comments were emotionally-driven, I'm impressed by the number of commenters, proving to show the number of Journey fans out there who care. Lastly, I look forward to Journey coming up with their own signature hit songs with Pineda since the album demonstrated they easily can.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
