Whattya Listenin' to Wednesday - 7/1/09

Greetings, chums and chumettes, the calendar sweeps away another week and another month from its spindles as we've now completed a half a year of 2009. Normally I'd feel inclined to give an update on how the scene's progressed at the midway point, but hell, let's just sum it tidily by stating sales-wise, the music industry may be in a rut thanks to Generation Tech, but the quality and diversity of music out there right now has escalated to some of its all-time greatness. To have so many bands with high-ranking albums whisk through this year, the second half of 2009 ought to be something to behold.

To this point, The Metal Minute's 2009 A-Listers would be comprised of Mastodon, Isis, Pelican, Slough Feg, Arise, Candlemass, Mantic Ritual, Tyr, Zombi, God Dethroned, Kylesa, My Dying Bride, Dream Theater, Warbringer, Kreator, Darkest Hour, Static-X, Hacride, Success Will Write Apocalypse Across the Sky, Scott "Wino" Weinrich and an honorable mention to Gonin-Ish whose recent album Naishikyo-Sekai may have been released before this year, but deserves all the accolades possible regardless of year.

In the second half of 2009 there's new Slayer, Megadeth, Clutch, Arkaea, Chthonic and Anthrax joints to look forward to and in honor of Slayer, I had to pull out Reign In Blood this week and puncture my eardrums on the road with it. You know, I'm never at a loss for words no matter how many times I've heard Reign; I'm still in awe of its power, precision and perfection, to the point I'll rank it as the third-best metal album of all-time behind Maiden's Number of the Beast and Powerslave. Fucking Slayer!!!!

Been on the go as usual but remaining ever-vigilant and hopeful for good tidings on the way. I enjoyed my fourth interview with Doro Pesch yesterday morning as the Metal Queen called in from Germany and simply made my day with her sweet candor. Mad love for that lady...

The music load wasn't very heavy this week due to an accelerated schedule, but the 25th anniversary edition of Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry easily won out as I reviewed it for About.com Heavy Metal this week. If you're shying from this album because you've bought it a bunch of times before, do give serious consideration to the bonus disc which features a bunch of previously-unreleased songs from 1983 which are more punk-oriented ala the Dictators, plus a very game new track called "30." Worth your investement.

Tube-wise, not a lot beyond Dallas Season 10, but I will be having to step on the gas with a monster pile of DVD promos having arrived the past few weeks including Maiden's Flight 666 which you can expect to see written up here in the immediate future. Also stay tuned for upcoming album reviews of the new Devildriver, Glittertind, Dark Castle, Psychostick and Sunn O))). A special thanks to Metal Mark for kicking off his new column Somewhere in Time Tuesdays here at The Metal Minute. Looking forward to seeing where his wayback machine takes us next...

I also tried this exercise where I put the 30,000 songs on my hard drive on shuffle and listened to the first 30 without skipping anything. I lucked out and nothing too terrible came up, the worst being Linkin Park and Drain STH. It was cool, but I was nervous the whole time that I'd have to live with 3 or 4 minutes of something terrible.
